It is extremely important to take proper post-operative care after a Sinus Lift Surgery.
Following the given instructions and maintaining a strict oral hygiene routine can minimize post-operative pain, swelling, and complications like sinus infections or graft failure.
After 30 minutes of Sinus Lift Surgery:
- Remove the cotton or gauze pack (if placed).
- Start the prescribed medications immediately especially antibiotics, nasal decongestants and painkillers.
- Have something cold, such as:
- Ice cream
- Chilled juice
- Milkshakes (To be taken without a straw)
For the first 24 hours after the Sinus Lift Surgery:
- Apply an ice pack externally on the cheek area for 10 minutes every 2 hours. (Continue this only during the first 24 hours to reduce swelling.)
- Avoid blowing your nose, sneezing forcefully, or sniffing aggressively.
- If you need to sneeze, do so with your mouth open to avoid pressure on the sinus area.
- Strictly avoid smoking, as it can delay healing and increase the risk of sinus infection or graft displacement.
- Avoid HOT, HARD, and SPICY foods.
- Avoid brushing, rinsing, or spitting during the first 24 hours to prevent dislodging the surgical clot or disturbing the graft.
- Stick to a soft, cold, and bland diet, such as:
- Curd, smoothies, mashed potatoes, ice cream, cold soups
After 24 hours of the Sinus Lift Surgery:
- You may start brushing your teeth, but avoid the surgical area for at least 7–10 days or as advised by your dentist.
- You may resume warm foods and liquids, but continue eating on the opposite side if instructed.
- Start saltwater rinses:
- Mix ½ teaspoon of salt in ½ glass of lukewarm water
- Rinse gently, 5–6 times daily
- Especially helpful after meals and brushing
- Helps maintain cleanliness and prevents infection
