It is extremely important to take proper post-operative care after a Tooth Filling procedure.
Following the given instructions and oral hygiene routine will help reduce sensitivity, ensure filling longevity, and prevent complications like fracture, dislodgement, or secondary decay.
After 30 Minutes of the Tooth Filling Procedure:
- Avoid eating or drinking until the numbness wears off (usually 1–2 hours) to prevent accidental cheek or tongue biting.
- If a temporary filling was placed, follow your dentist’s advice strictly on chewing and eating.
- If a composite (white) filling was done, you may eat once numbness wears off, but avoid chewing on the filled side for a few hours.
For the First 24 Hours After the Tooth Filling:
- Avoid hard, sticky, or crunchy foods, especially if a deep filling was done or if it's a temporary restoration.
- Do not chew on the filled tooth if possible, especially if the dentist has advised you to wait.
- You may experience mild sensitivity to hot, cold, or pressure, which is normal and usually resolves in a few days.
- If you experience high points while biting, report to your dentist. It could mean the filling is slightly raised and needs adjustment.
- Avoid hot or spicy foods if the tooth feels sensitive.
After 24 Hours of the Tooth Filling Procedure:
- You can resume normal eating habits, unless instructed otherwise.
- If the filling was done under deep decay, sensitivity may persist for a few more days, but it should gradually reduce.
- If sensitivity worsens or persists beyond 7–10 days, visit your dentist. It may indicate pulp involvement or need for further treatment like root canal.
- Avoid using your teeth as tools (to open packets or bite nails) to prevent cracking the filling.
- Maintain proper oral hygiene:
- Brush twice daily with a soft-bristled brush
- Use a fluoride toothpaste
- Floss carefully, especially around the filled area
