Tips for toothbrush maintenance and care

Besides knowing what kind of toothbrush and toothpaste to use, it is also very important to understand how to maintain toothbrush hygiene. Keeping your toothbrush free of germs is critical for minimizing infections and the health risks that can come from a contaminated brush. Here are some tips for toothbrush maintenance and care.

1. Rinse your toothbrush thoroughly after use.

After brushing your teeth,  rinse the bristles of the brush under tap water. This will allow all food particles, toothpaste, and other germs and debris to be removed.  Always store it in upright position and not lying as it will allow it to air dry completely before the next use. Moist surface allows more germs growth.

2. Soak it in antibacterial mouthwash (Optional)

Although rising your brush thoroughly with water is sufficient, but if it doesn’t give you peace of mind, then you can soak it in antibacterial mouth “after use” for 2 minutes.

3. Do not share your toothbrush

Sharing your toothbrush  is bad idea as it could result in exchange of germs and that can promote poor oral hygiene. If someone else has used your toothbrush by mistakenly, you should wash it thoroughly or, better yet, you may just want to throw it away. If you store your toothbrush in the same holder alongside others, be sure they remain separate from each other in order to prohibit cross-contamination of germs.

4. Store uncovered

To maintain toothbrush hygiene, never store it inside of a closed container or cap it as it will increase the likelihood of germs developing in the bristles. It’s important that you allow your toothbrush to breathe and remain exposed to the open air. This reduces the chance for bacteria to grow. 5. Replace your toothbrush

After sometime, the toothbrush bristles get worn out and frayed. This reduces their effectiveness of removing deposits and also it may hurt your gums. Therefore, changing brush frequently is necessary. American Dental Association recommends changing of brush every 3 months.

6. Keep your toothbrush holder clean.

No point cleaning your toothbrush properly if your holder is unclean. You can use hot water to clean it and it should be done at least once weekly.
