It is extremely important to take proper post-treatment care after Teeth Whitening. Following the given instructions and avoiding stain-causing habits can help maintain the whitening effect for a longer time and minimize post-treatment sensitivity.
After 30 Minutes of the Teeth Whitening Procedure:
- Do not eat or drink anything (except plain water) for at least 30 minutes after the whitening session to allow the whitening agents to settle.
- If you experience mild sensitivity, it is common and usually subsides within a few hours. You may take a painkiller as prescribed or recommended by your dentist, if needed.
For the First 24 Hours After the Teeth Whitening Procedure:
- Do not smoke or use tobacco in any form as it causes severe staining.
- Avoid very hot or cold food or drinks as your teeth may be temporarily sensitive post-treatment.
- If sensitivity persists, use anti-sensitivity toothpaste (e.g., Sensodyne, Thermoseal) and avoid using abrasive or whitening toothpastes for a few days.
- Do not use colored mouthwashes or toothpaste with strong dyes during this period.
- Avoid consuming colored or pigmented foods and beverages such as:
- Coffee, tea, red wine, cola, colored juices (like orange, pomegranate, beetroot)
- Tomato-based sauces, soy sauce, turmeric-based dishes, berries, chocolate
After 24 Hours of the Teeth Whitening Procedure:
- You can gradually reintroduce your regular diet, but try to continue limiting highly pigmented foods and drinks for the next 2–3 days for best results.
- Continue using anti-sensitivity toothpaste if needed.
- Resume your normal brushing and flossing routine, twice daily, with a soft-bristled toothbrush.
- Use a straw when drinking staining beverages in the future to reduce contact with the front teeth.
Follow-Up and Long-Term Maintenance:
- Touch-up whitening treatments (in-office or at-home trays) may be needed every 6–12 months, depending on lifestyle and diet.
- Visit your dentist regularly for routine check-ups and cleanings.
- Maintain good oral hygiene to prolong the effects of whitening:
- Brush twice daily
- Floss once a day
- Rinse your mouth after meals
