Post- Op Instructions – Implant Surgery

It is extremely important to take proper post-operative care after Dental Implant Surgery. Following the instructions and oral hygiene routine can minimize post-operative pain, swelling, and general discomfort while ensuring long-term implant success.

After 30 minutes of Implant Surgery:
  • Remove cotton or gauze pack (if placed).
  • Start the prescribed medications as directed (antibiotics, painkillers, anti-inflammatories).
  • Have something cold, such as:
  • Ice cream
  • Fruit juice
  • Milkshakes (To be taken without a straw)
For the first 24 hours after the Implant Surgery:
  • Apply an ice pack externally on the operated area for 10 minutes every 2 hours. (Only continue this for the first 24 hours after surgery.)
  • Avoid smoking or alcohol, as it may delay healing and increase chances of implant failure.
  • Avoid HOT, HARD & SPICY foods
  • Avoid brushing, rinsing, or spitting, as it may increase bleeding and disturb the surgical site.
  • Do not touch or disturb the implant site with fingers or tongue.
  • Diet should consist of SOFT, COLD & BLAND foods, such as:
  • Curd, smoothies, yogurt, boiled potatoes, cold soups.
After 24 hours of the Implant Surgery:
  • You can start with your regular diet (including warm fluids). (Still avoid chewing directly on the implant site until advised by your doctor.)
  • You can start brushing your teeth, but avoid the surgical area for at least 7 days or as instructed.
  • Mix ½ teaspoon of salt in ½ glass of lukewarm water and rinse your mouth gently. Repeat 5–6 times daily, especially:
  • After meals
  • After brushing (This helps in healing and keeping the implant area clean.)
