Post- Op Instructions – Root canal

It is extremely important to take proper care after Root Canal Treatment (RCT), especially when a temporary cement has been placed. Following the instructions carefully can help reduce discomfort, protect the treated tooth, and ensure long-term success of the treatment.

After 30 Minutes of Root Canal Treatment with Temporary Cement:
  • Do not drink water or any other fluids for at least 30 minutes as it can interfere with the setting and strength of the temporary cement.
  • Take a painkiller as prescribed by your dentist within 1 hour of leaving the clinic. This ensures the medication starts working before the effect of anesthesia wears off, helping to reduce post-treatment pain.
For the First 48 Hours After Root Canal Treatment:
  • If you experience discomfort or mild swelling, apply an ice pack from the outside of the treated area for 10 minutes intermittently. This helps reduce inflammation.
  • Avoid chewing on the treated tooth, as it remains tender and fragile for at least 2 days post-procedure. Chewing can lead to fracture of the tooth or dislodgement of the temporary filling.
  • Prefer to chew from the opposite side until the permanent crown or cap is placed.
  • Avoid hard, crunchy, or sticky foods (like nuts, chips, candy, or chewing gum), which can damage the treated tooth or dislodge the temporary cement.
After Temporary Filling – What You Must Know:
  • The cement placed after completing a root canal is usually temporary. Leaving it in place for too long can allow bacteria to re-enter the tooth, leading to infection or failure of the treatment.
  • It is crucial to return to the dental clinic for the next step — typically a core build-up followed by a permanent crown.
  • Delaying the placement of the final crown increases the risk of fracture or complete loss of the treated tooth, especially since root canal treated teeth are structurally weaker.
Oral Hygiene and Long-Term Care:
  • Continue brushing and flossing as usual, even around the root canal treated tooth. Maintaining oral hygiene is key to preventing future decay or gum problems.
  • Use gentle strokes when brushing near the treated area, and consult your dentist for special flossing techniques if needed.
