Dos and Don'ts after Root Canal Procedure
  • Do not drink water for 30 mins post placement of temporary cement as it interferes with the strength of the cement.
  • It is recommended to take a painkiller as prescribed by your doctor within 1 hour of leaving our clinic. It is best to get the medication into your blood stream before the effect of anesthesia begins to subside.
  • If you are experiencing discomfort, then you can apply ice pack from outside in the area of treatment to minimize swelling.
  • Avoid chewing in that area as the tooth is usually tender for atleast 2 days post treatment. Also it may fracture under excessive pressure. Therefore, try to chew from the opposite side till the crown has been placed.
  • Avoid crunchy or hard food which may fracture the root canal treated tooth.
  • The cement placed after completion of root canal is usually temporary. This temporary cement if left too long can allow bacteria to re enter the tooth leading to further infection. Therefore, it is necessary to return to the dental clinic for a core - build up and crown.
  • Delay in obtaining your final restoration or crown can result in fracture or loss of tooth.
  • Continue brushing and flossing around the root canal treated tooth normally.
